Those serious about their betting will already be quite aware that the going is all important, and with rain sweeping much of the Country already this week, that will be of enormous importance as we head toward the Epsom classics this weekend.

Naturally, the Oaks will be the event most people take an interest in, even if it invariably fails to drum up the interest of the Derby for some unknown reason, but my first bet will be a small one on PENITENT (8/1 SkyBet) in the 2.45pm for the bang in form David O’Meara yard. Official ratings tell us the eight year-old will struggle to beat his rivals but any ease in the ground will suit and he could yet pull off a minor shock.

As for the Oaks itself, it is never an easy one to call and this year is no exception. I've decided to nail my colours to the mast of TAGHROODA (4/1 William Hill) who was impressive at Newmarket and deserves to be the market favourite. Softish ground will be a concern to connections but will the forecast set fair for the rest of the day there is every chance that the ground could well be close to good come post time. She looks a solid betting prospect and will be the one carrying my cash here.
