Glorious Goodwood Betting Tips: Tuesday 28th July 2015

2.00 – Sky Bet First Race Special Stakes (Handicap) Cl2 1m1f192y CH4

12/13 – Aged 4 or 5 years-old
12/13 – Had won over at least 1m2f before
11/13 – Had 4 or more previous runs that season
11/13 – Had won at least 3 times already during their career
10/13 – Carried 8-11 or more
10/13 – Unplaced favourites
9/13 – Returned 12/1 or shorter in the betting
9/13 – Unplaced last time out
9/13 – Had run at Goodwood before
9/13 – Returned a double-figure price in the betting
4/13 – Trained by Mark Johnston
3/13 – Won their last race
2/13 – Trained by Mick Channon
0/13 – Winning favourites
The average winning SP in the last 10 years is 12/1

VERDICT: Mark Johnston’s SENNOCKIAN STAR (Bet now at 12/1 with Paddy Power) won this race 12 months and the Mark Johnston team, who train this horse, have won this race four times since 2006. Last year’s winner is actually a pound lower than when winning last term and being a winner in soft ground means he’s fine on that score too. Yes, he needs to put a below-par effort last time behind him, but the horse often does that and with the stable’s record in the race and the fact he clearly handles the tricky Goodwood course then he’s worth giving another chance too. The Johnston team also run Fire Fighting and Zand, so the more cautious bettors out there might want to perm up the three.

BET NOW – SENNOCKIAN STAR (e/w)

2.35 – Qatar Vintage Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 7f CH4

12/13 – Had won over 6f or 7f before
12/13 – Returned 6/1 or shorter in the betting
12/13 – Finished 1st or 2nd last time out
11/13 – Had 2 or 3 previous career runs
10/13 – Won last time out
9/13 – Won by a March or later foal
9/13 – Placed favourites
8/13 – Winning favourites
7/13 – Ran at either Newmarket (5) or Ascot (2) last time out
6/13 – Had won 2 previous races
4/13 – Had run at Goodwood before
4/13 – Trained by Richard Hannon
4/13 – Ridden by Richard Hughes
2/13 – Ridden by Frankie Dettori
The average winning SP in the last 10 years is 11/4

VERDICT: The Hannon yard have a cracking record in this race – winning it four times in the last 5 runnings, however, they might struggle to maintain that run with their sole runner this year – Palawan. A beaten favourite last time out, the horse has a bit to prove and also a fair bit to find on these terms with several of these. Aidan O’Brien won the contest 12 months ago and his Air Vice Marshal bids to repeat that stable win, however, this could be another for the boys in blue of Godolphin. They run BIRCHWOOD (Bet now at 3/1 with Bet365), who has won three on his four starts and had the O’Brien horse a length back in second last time out at Newmarket. If reproducing that level of form the horse will be hard to peg back, but will need to show he’s capable of that on this slightly different ground.

BET NOW – BIRCHWOOD

3.10 – Qatar Lennox Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 7f CH4

13/13 – Had won at least 2 times before
12/13 – Returned 7/1 or shorter in the betting
11/13 – Had 2 or more previous runs already that season
10/13 – Had won over 7f before
10/13 – Previous Group Race winners
9/13 – Had previously won a Group 2 or 3
8/13 – Aged 3 or 4 years-old
7/13 – Had run at Goodwood before
5/13 – Ran at Ascot last time out
4/13 – Winning favourites
2/13 – Ridden by Richard Hughes
2/13 – Trained by Richard Hannon
The average winning SP in the last 10 years is 4/1

VERDICT: We’ve seen the favourite win this race three times in the last 4 years so take that into account, while over the last 10 years we’ve seen 9 winners aged either 3 or 5 years-old. The Hannon yard last won the race in 2011 and have a strong-hand – this time with Tupi and Toormore, who is now with Godolphin. The boys in blue also run Safety Check, who comes here on a four-timer and is a past CD winner. However, the one we like is DUTCH CONNECTION (Bet now at 5/2 with Betfair). The Charles Hills-trained 3 year-old is another CD here after winning a maiden at this meeting 12 months ago. He was last seen running a close second over in France in Group One company and if reproducing that form should take the beating, especially getting weight from the older horses.

BET NOW – DUTCH CONNECTION

3.45 – Summer Stakes (Handicap) Cl2 1m6f CH4

11/12 – Aged either 4 or 5 years-old
11/12 – Had won at least twice before
11/12 – Had raced within the last 4 weeks
10/12 – Had won over at least 1m4f before
9/12 – Returned 9/1 or shorter in the betting
8/12 – Came from the top three in the betting
8/12 – Rated between 90-100
8/12 – Carried 9-7 or more
7/12 – Placed favourites
4/12 – Winning favourites
4/12 – Ran at Newmarket last time out
3/12 – Won last time out
3/12 – Ran at Ascot last time out
2/12 – Trained by Luca Cumani
2/12 – Trained by Mark Johnston
2/12 – Ridden by Ryan Moore
The average winning SP in the last 10 years is 15/2

VERDICT: A tricky long-distance handicap next, but having won this race twice since 2006 then recent King George winning trainer, Luca Cumani, is the man to note. He runs AJMAN BRIDGE (Bet now at 13/2 with William Hill) here, who, despite being a beaten favourite last time in the John Smith’s Cup,  wasn’t beaten far and heads here with a big chance. The step up in trip looks sure to suit and after a string of good placed efforts can hopefully make amends here. Of the rest, Mark Johnston’s Old Newton Cup winner, Notarised, is the only CD winner in the line-up so is feared – but does need to defy a 7lb hike in the ratings.

BET NOW – AJMAN BRIDGE (e/w)
