Chile v Australia Predictions and Betting Tips

Many people’s dark horse open their World Cup campaign against a side who look certain to crash out in the group, here are our World Cup 2014 betting tips.

For those of you cursing England's luck of the draw in Brazil, spare a thought for Australia who found themselves saddled with Spain, Holland and opening Group B opponents, Chile. If this wasn't harsh enough, their fixture against the South Americans also falls on Friday 13th.

After coasting through their qualifying group with five wins and a solitary defeat, Australia booked their place at the 2014 World Cup far more comfortably that most other nations had the pleasure. However, cynics will immediately point to their opponents during this campaign, and rightly so. In a polar opposite to that of the group that faces them now, The Aussies found themselves up against Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Oman. In truth, they had no excuse not to qualify.

Clearly one of the underdogs in Brazil, few have given Australia much of a chance pre tournament. Perhaps none more so than the 'Sydney Morning Herald' who branded their nation as "The worst team at the World Cup". Not the most patriotic headline I've ever read and I'm sure the squad would care much to read it either. In fairness, there is plenty of quality in the Australian squad and it's not as if they head into the tournament with Harold Bishop and Mick Dundee leading the line.

In the engine room, Mile Jedinak had a terrific season with Crystal Palace and Marc Bresciano is well travelled in Europe with plenty of big tournament experience. Elsewhere, the industrious Tim Cahill has plenty of goals in him and has been a perpetual nuisance from set-pieces all his career. Whilst it will be tough for the Aussies to avoid the group B wooden spoon, they won't be handed it quietly.

Similarly to their opening opponents, Chile will have also felt a little disappointed with the hand they've been dealt. Many England fans will remember how the South Americans dominated at Wembley last year, and at World Cup 2014 betting odds of 50/1 for the World Cup in a familiar environment, they may well be worth monitoring if they can negotiate their way past the Spanish or the Dutch.

Qualifying went fairly smoothly for the Chileans as they finished third thanks to picking up 9 wins from a possible 16. In a star-studded South American group, this is no mean feat. During the campaign, forward Eduardo Vargas, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez notched 14 goals between them, with the latter also starring in the win over England back in November. The Barcelona man can be a truly world class performer on his day.

Browsing the early World Cup 2014 betting odds match prices, Chile can be backed at 8/15 which is quite reasonable considering the gulf in class between the two sides. Australia are on offer at 8/1, with the draw available at 13/4. Both teams only had one draw between them throughout the entire qualifying campaign, so they are definitely due one. However, I cannot see past a Chile victory and for that reason my first World Cup 2014 betting tip for this match is for them to win 3-0 with Coral at 10/1 and also to be winning at half time and at full time, a 7/5 shot with William Hill. The Chileans scored several first half goals in qualifying as well as notching in 14 of their 16 games.

Heading into the goalscorer markets, Chile's trio of forwards will obviously catch the eye and are all similarly priced. However, there is an injury doubt over Arturo Vidal which could curtail some of his game time or even rule him out entirely. Eduardo Vargas often plays out wide like a headless chicken and has the poorest goal to game ratio. Therefore, back Alexis Sanchez to score anytime at 7/5 with William Hill. The Barcelona forward still managed 19 goals in La Liga this season despite warming the bench on several occasions. He could turn up drunk and still bag a hat-trick.
