Irish Ante-Post Day 4 Festival Betting Tips

Triumph Hurdle

Peace and Co looks a special recruit to the hurdling scene and is the leading hope for the Triumph Hurdle.  Despite his potential, he looks short in the betting and a few shrewd trainers will be out to lower his colours.  Willie Mullins has unleashed a few nice four-year-olds to date, with Kalkir looking the pick of the bunch.  However, a line through the Mullins horse emphasises the claims of FISCAL FOCUS (E/W) (20/1 Paddy Power) who beat Kalkir fair and square over Christmas at Leopardstown.  Des McDonagh ran his smart gelding in the Irish Champion Hurdle and, by pulling hard early on, he ruined his chances of seeing out the trip against such a high class field.  If he turns up in this race, he will be suited by the strong pace and if worth chancing at generous odds.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

The current favourite for this 3m hurdling contest is Black Hercules who has been impressive over the smaller obstacles to date and has some very good bumper form.  The worry here would have to be that he has yet to be tested fully over hurdles, although he did account for the smart Alpha Des Obeaux on his last run.  Mullins could also run Outlander, Shaneshill and No More Heroes whom would all be in with a fighting chance but look as though they are short of Black Hercules class.  One that I do feel is overpriced is MARTELLO TOWER (E/W) (16/1 Ladbrokes).  Mags Mullins exciting Milan gelding will be suited by both the 3m trip and the better ground, and should relish the daunting Cheltenham hill.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

Both last year’s winner and runner-up will return and have another crack at the race, with Lord Windermere having failed to sparkle this season and with On His Own likely to find at least one too good once again.  Mullins also runs Boston Bob and Djackadam who are a pair not without their chances.  The focus falls on another two Irish horses however with Road to Riches and CARLINGFORD LOUGH (E/W) (12/1 William Hill) of huge interest.  The former won the Galway Plate in the summer and rapidly rose to the top.  The Gamut gelding is obviously very talented and goes on any ground however, he may lack the necessary experience of Cheltenham.  Carlingford Lough is John Kiely’s stable star that runs in the colours of JP McManus and looks a solid each-way bet.  After making a very satisfying seasonal reappearance in the Lexus, he claimed the Irish Hennessy under a typical McCoy drive and he should have a solid chance in the Gold Cup with further improvement likely.
