Cheltenham Festival Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips

Douvan is the short priced favourite to get the Willie Mullins bandwagon rolling straight away.  He has been effortless in both his wins in Ireland this season, latterly in a Grade 2 at Punchestown when winning with chunks in hand.  The question he will likely have to answer refers to the ground, as he has never encountered anything better than soft and the Cheltenham going is likely to be quicker.

L'Ami Serge has the same questions to answer having also never run on anything quicker than soft.  His form has more substance than Douvan with better horses behind in all three of his wins.  He appears to have improved massively whilst with Nicky Henderson having failed to win in six starts in France but that does raise questions over whether he will be able to show the necessary improvement needed in order to win.

JOLLYALLEN (E/W) (12/1 Ladbrokes) is a monster of a horse who is an early fancy of mine for the 2016 Arkle.  Despite being beaten, he enhanced his reputation at Sandown last time out when getting outbattled by hardened handicapper, Garde La Victoire.  He still looked green under pressure on that occasion but will have benefitted from that education and, as he travels so well, the hectic pace that is the norm in the Supreme should suit.

As with most of the Mullins recruits, it's hard to be sure where Nichols Canyon will end up.  He is entered in this, the Neptune and the Albert Bartlett and, as a flat winner over 14f, the Neptune would look the best fit but murmurs from Ireland suggest he may come here.  Officially rated 111 on the flat he is one of the smartest recruits to switch to the NH scene this season and warrants get serious consideration wherever he ends up.

At a bigger price I'm going to keep the faith with SILVER CONCORDE (E/W) (33/1 Coral) who won the Bumper at last year’s Festival.  He has been a disappointment over hurdles so far but the likelihood of quicker ground would definitely suit.  It's easy enough to forgive his runs on very soft this season with trainer, Dermot Weld, likely to have had this contest mapped out since last season.

This is a far more open contest than the market suggests with both Douvan and L'Ami Serge very impressive to date.  Nevertheless, the likelihood is that the ground will be considerably quicker than both have encountered to date so both have to prove they can handle conditions.  With that in mind, both JOLLYALLEN and SILVER CONCORDE are chosen against them.  The former needs to brush-up on his hurdling technique but is such a big horse than improvement is highly likely and he has a massive engine with plenty of form on better ground.  Silver Concorde has a mountain to climb on this seasons’ efforts, but good ground would see him in a much better light and he's worth a risk.
